<p>Women from past generations did not know how to properly take care of themselves for many reasons. The most prevalent reason that women did not know how to take care of themselves was simply a lack of medical research and general knowledge about female health at the time. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> Swallowing is something we all take for granted, it is easy and something we do without even thinking about the process involved. In fact there are over 50 sets of muscles and thousands of nerves involved in the process of getting the food you are eating from your mouth in to your stomach. There are three stages to swallowing; chewing, to ensure the pieces of food are small enough to be swallowed, getting the food in to the oesophagus (the tube that runs between your throat and your stomach) as opposed to your trachea (the tube that goes in to your lungs, often known as the windpipe) and finally getting the food to leave the oesophagus and enter your stomach.</p>
<p>Dysphagia is a clinical condition where something goes wrong with this process and swallowing food or liquid becomes difficult and or painful. It is a condition that is usually caused by some other underlying health problem and is particularly common in stroke patients and the elderly. Complications as a result of dysphagia can greatly impact the recovery time and the overall rehabilitation of a patient.</p>
<p>There are two distinct forms of dysphagia, Oropharyngeal or higher dysphagia where the difficulty arises with the mouth or throat area. Oropharyngeal dysphagia tends to be neurological where the nerves and muscles which control swallowing have become damaged, this type of dysphagia is the most difficult to treat and can itself lead to many other complications. Oesophageal or lower dysphagia arises as a result of damage to the oesophagus of one form or another. Usually a blockage or irritation, this type of dysphagia is easier to treat and is normally resolved with physical therapy, or occasionally surgery.</p>
<p>Patients with dysphagia may present with a number of symptoms which include pain while swallowing, regurgitating food, coughing or choking when eating or a sensation that food is stuck in the throat. In severe cases, people find that they are completely unable to swallow. The treatment will obviously be determined by the root cause of the problem but will range from physical therapy to surgery. In some cases, for instance where the swallowing reflexes or the inside of the mouth or throat have been damaged, patients may have to either relearn how to swallow or learn new techniques to swallow. In other cases, feeding tubes will need to be used to ensure that patients do not become dehydrated or malnourished.</p>
<p>Dysphagia in stroke patients tends to be neurological whereby the part of the brain or nervous system that regulates swallowing and the associated reflexes has been damaged; patients have trouble swallowing as their body has literally forgotten how to swallow. Stroke dysphagia is estimated to occur in one out of every two cases, although some research suggests that up to 73% of stroke victims will have problems swallowing. Apart from the obvious complications of hydration and nutrition which will arise from this type of dysphagia stroke patients with the condition will also find themselves at a high risk from related complications.</p>
<p>Oropharyngeal dysphagia can prevent the larynx from closing properly during swallowing, thereby allowing particles of food to enter the respiratory system and thereby the lungs, i.e., the food goes down the wrong way. This can lead to infections on the lungs and it is not uncommon for dysphagic stroke patients to develop aspiration pneumonia, (pneumonia caused by food being aspirated or breathed in) a condition which can be fatal. It is therefore critical that stroke and dysphagia are diagnosed quickly in order that steps can be taken to prevent food getting on to the lungs. Other causes of neurological dysphagia include cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.</p>
<p>Oesophageal dysphagia tends to be non-neurological and can be caused by obstructions in the mouth or oesophagus. Conditions such as a cleft lip or palate or mouth cancer can cause swallowing difficulties. Other conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) where stomach acid enters the oesophagus causing scar tissue can result in dysphagia. Tuberculosis, herpes and diseases requiring radiotherapy can also result in scar tissue forming along the oesophagus making swallowing difficult and painful.</p>
<p>Achalasia is a type of muscular dysphagia which affects approximately 1 in every 100,000 people. It is a lifelong condition which cannot be cured, although there are a number of treatments available. <p>There has been some debate over the years about how much of each of the specific omega-3s were necessary for human health. Currently, the USRDA says that an &#8220;acceptable&#8221; intake is 1100mg of total omega-3s for women and 1600mg for men.</p>
<p>But, a growing body of evidence indicates that higher intakes or ALA, EPA and DHA may provide some protection against heart and cardiovascular disease. The human body needs all three. </p>
<p>There are numerous sources of ALA. It is found in avocadoes, olives, walnuts, olive oil and canola oil. The amount present in those foods is more balanced in relation to the amount of omega-6s they contain than it is in other vegetable oils. For example, corn oil contains 40 times more omega-6s than 3s and peanut oil contains none. So, you have to do a little research if you want to be sure you are getting enough ALA.</p>
<p>When it comes to eating oily or fatty fish EPA and DHA are the omega-3s we are looking for. Whereas most foods contain more omega-6s than omega-3s, fish contains about four times more omega-3s. So, eating a serving of fish every day or taking a good fish oil supplement could help you achieve an ideal balance of omega-6:3 intake, something doctors believe would be better for your short-term health and a lot better for your long-term health.</p>
<p>Research indicates that diets containing large amounts of total dietary fat, large amounts of saturated fat, high intake of trans-fatty acids and an imbalance in the intake of polyunsaturated omega-6s and omega-3s increase a person&#8217;s risk of degenerative diseases of all kinds, particularly those that have long been considered age-related. </p>
<p>Fish EPA, as well as DHA, is often recommended for people that have suffered from a heart attack or are at risk for heart disease. They are recommended for people that suffer from depression, too. </p>
<p>A recent study indicates that they may reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases. Primarily, researchers have looked at the benefit for age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in the elderly population.</p>

<p>A bacterium that makes an enzyme called NDM-1 is freaking out global health researchers. Apparently this new superbug is capable of resisting one of the World&#8217;s most powerful antibiotics &#8211; carbapenems. This NDM-1 enzyme producing bacteria can exist inside other infection causing bacteria like E.Coli, making them resistant to antibiotics, possibly all antibiotics. Infections by these NDM-1 infected bacteria could produce infections that are deadly and untreatable. To make matters worse, it is feared that NDM-1 may end up in strains of bacteria that are easily transmitted creating fast moving and deadly international pandemics. So far, isolated cases of NDM-1 infections have been identified in several hospital patients scattered across Great Britain (50 cases) but similar infections are popping up in isolated areas of the U.S., Canada, Holland, Australia. However, in some countries like India and Pakistan it appears to be spreading rapidly and many of the infections identified in Great Britain were in patients who recently had cosmetic surgery in either India or Pakistan. In several cases and of major concern is some of these NDM-1 bacterial infections have spread from hospital patient to hospital patient. While many of the NDM-1 superbug infections detected so far have been treatable with a combination of antibiotics, at least one in Great Britain has resisted all treatment, including treatment with carbapenems, an antibiotic which is normally reserved as a last resort treatment. NDM-1 infection is just the latest in a growing list of new global health superbug infections like H1N1 (Swine Flu) and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). The fear among health scientists is that the NDM-1 could potentially make many, if not all, types of disease causing bacteria resistant to all known antibiotics. Such and unbeatable bacteria would create a global health problem, particularly if the bacteria is one that is easily transmittable. Overuse of antibiotics coupled with the ability of bacteria to mutate and to become resistant to antibiotics will undoubtedly be a major source of concern for world health researchers for years to come. Meanwhile, the only thing you can do to protect yourself is use hand sanitizers, wash your hands frequently, and hold a hand over your face when you cough or sneeze and take vaccines when available. (Note: One bright spot is the development of vaccine patches which may soon replace sharp needle jabs. Traditional injections by a single needle may soon be replaced by patches with tiny micro needles that you can self apply. The patches will have hundreds of microscopic needles (0.65mm) that are loaded in a skin patch and dissolve into your skin. That&#8217;s something to look forward to.)These new &#8220;Superbugs&#8221; like NDM-1 bacteria, E.coli, SARS, Ebola, H1N1,West Nile virus and other emerging health threats caused by mutating pathogens are a real threat to global health and are spreading largely as a result of increases in international trade and travel &#8211; we should expect more. The international health community is working non-stop to protect us from infections but without effective antibiotics that job will be tough.
